Holly Hill Woodland Park is an old Victorian Estate, situated ?at Sarisbury Green? between Warsash and the River Hamble in Hampshire. The park ?stands in? about 70 acres of woodland, much of which was landscaped into a garden in Victorian times. It is possible, though not proven, that the designer was Sir Joseph Paxton, known for the Great Exhibition of 1851 (later dubbed the Crystal Palace). The park now contains many ?well-established? exotic trees (as well as vast amounts of the ubiquitous rhododenron), collected from across the world by the ?exploratory?adventurous? Victorians. The lakes were also dug then, as part of the landscaping of the park. Observant visitors walking round the lakes will notice an abundance of stone. This forms waterfalls and the grotto, and can also be seen ?just? lying near the path. This stone cannot be easily identified - because it is all artificial. It is Pulhamite, made from stone, rubble, and cement, individually crafted to form the natural-looking rocks. Holly Hill Woodland Park is an interesting and attractive place to visit, and is a haven for wildlife. We hope you enjoy your visit to this site - both virtual and actual! |
