My Sites
Since beginning web design in 2002, the following is my 'small but beautiful' portfolio.
With my background of a software developer, VB6 programmer and Microsoft Certified Solution Developer, I am particularly enthusiastic about the standards and guidelines that the W3 Consortium have introduced for web design. From the start, I have been aware of the many potential pitfalls of web design, from cross-browser compatibility problems and accessibility issues, to the challenge of attracting users into a site and then keeping them there.
Beginning with my background as an experienced applications developer, then following web design courses with the Open University, I have always written to the internationally-recognised web design standards.
I am able to write compact and clean code, and I consider 'marketing' and 'site promotion' from the beginning of design.
My sites are clear, clean and simple. They are written to inform, sell or educate, with 'entertainment' a secondary consideration.
The following are sites I have developed and am developing:
| 2004 - Current sites under development |
| Portsdown Conservation Volunteers |
As an active conservation volunteer, I am involved with the Portsdown Hill Conservation Volunteers, and spend many hours working on the local Hill. I've also documented my 2 years there, here!
|
| Open University |
As an active Open University student, this is a bit about my study, and some useful links about my courses - as well as a degree-classification calculator download
|
| Portsdown Geology |
My major 'hobby' site - before getting very involved with the PCV above!
All about the Portsdown geology for which I am doing the research.
This is an ongoing project.
|
| 2003 |
| Portsdown Geology |
My major 'hobby' site, all about the Portsdown geology for which I am doing the research.
This is an ongoing project, and will keep me busy throughout 2003 and beyond.
|
| Iron Fertilisation of the Oceans |
As part of my Open University "Environmental Web" course, I am writing a website that discusses plans to fertilise the oceans with iron, in an attempt to ameliorate global warming.
|
| Javascript demonstration |
As part of my Open University "Client-side development" course, I wrote this website to demonstrate the power of Javascript.
|
| Auction House demonstration |
As part of my Open University "Server-side development" course, I wrote this website to demonstrate a simple server-side auction-house.
|
| New Road Allotments - site removed |
As an active conservation volunteer, I was involved with the BTCV project that is setting up Community Allotments between Havant and Bedhampton. This site details the ongoing development of those allotments.

Kolara
www.kolara.co.uk
|
A re-write of a commercial site that had been written in FrontPage.
I used their design and re-wrote it using XHTML-valid code and a style sheet
|
| 2002 - Cobwebs - early practice sites no longer under development |
| Black's Pots and Kettles |
My University Web Design project site.
This project was completed and submitted, along with a report.
It has no images, and only 4 pages - Home, Products, Feedback and Library.
This site and the report together earned me a distinction - so I must be doing something right.
|
| Milestones |
Conversion of a leaflet that came through my door into a website.
It uses javascript to open and close lengthy price-tables in the Products page.
This project was a development toy for the unfolding price list.
|
| Holly Hill |
Once, my hobby site for the volunteers.
It uses javascript to open full-size photos in a 'photo-display' window whilst adhering to XHTML-strict validation, for example within the 'volunteers' pages. There are also javascript dropdowns from some menu items.
This project was developed with great enthusiasm, but I stopped when I left the volunteers group.

| The Press Gang |
My very very first attempt to play at web design :-) . |
